"You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation." - Plato
We should play more. I'm going to play more. You can tell a lot about a person on whether or not they can play. If someone wants to get together to know me better this month, maybe instead of coffee (hot chocolate in my case) I'll invite them to something fun like...man, I can't even think of ideas! That's so pathetic! Help me out here. Maybe coffee is as fun as it gets this time of year. But in the summer what about a picnic at the park instead of lunch at a restaurant? You know, something to shake it up a bit and just be....ourselves. Dorky, human, funny little creatures that we are.
Seriously, when was the last time you really laughed and played with people? And what is your best memory of your friend? Was it in a really deep conversation or was it when you did something ridiculous with them? For me, its always the hilariously silly moments I remember best. And I don't think I'm shallow (by all means let me know if I am). Our staff Christmas party or summer beach trip is my favorite time of the year to be with our staff. It's different than office/Sunday life. And we have a great staff of non-fake, interesting and freaking funny people. But still, you get them out of their element and everyone is just a little silly and stoked to just be together without anything else weighing on them. More to the point, they are really themselves. Trying to play volleyball in the sand, or hanging with their spouse at a party eating food they like and telling stories they think are funny, or challenging each other to a bouncy obstacle course at a volunteer picnic. I like silly and laughter and....play. I want to play more.

ok, so for my birthday this year, I can't decide between kareoke, rollerskating, or 80's dance night (dress-up, of course). What do you think? ;D
Having a little boy helps me play every day for an hour or two. I often dance for him all wild and crazy until I'm out of breath.
Last week I met a mom at the park. Our boys crawled around in the sand while we talked or pushed them in the baby swings. But get this...I made coffee ahead of time and brought it with all the fixin's including regular mugs just because I don't like travel mugs.
Other ideas - meet a friend at the dog park with the dogs and a frisbee, go for a bike ride, bake cookies together - or make sugar cookies ahead or time and invite a friend over to help decorate them, go out in the driveway and jump rope with a friend (my neighbor does this every day with her daughter), invite a few ladies over and do some exfoliating scrubs on your hands and feet (we've done that - take turns doing the massage part for each other - it's heavenly), gather for bunko - I have girfriends who do this once a month, go walk through a nursery together and each buy a plant.
THis is not play but it's a fun thing I look forward to every month - some girlfriends get together for GSD Saturday (Get Stuff Done) - we meet at someone's house (our men take the kids) with something to do (sewing, mending, thank you cards, photo albums to assemble...) eat fruit salad and bagels and coffee, and do our "stuff" while catching up.
I've been wanting to have someone over to learn how to can/preserve or to make soap or something.
Wanna come play with me? Pillow fight?
yes a pillow fight with you Jess would certainly keep me laughing myself silly for a good long time. ahhh...someday. these are all great ideas - love it!
and wendy - i haven't roller skated since i was a kid! i am definetely coming to that party. :)
you should choose the rollerskating wendy, i can just imagine you all. that really would be a fun time for you :)
play is good karen, i am with that, i love having fun, i love to laugh, laughter really does my heart good.
After reading your blog I was inspired and jumped on the trampoline with my kids and played soccer with Cole. Good times. Kids keep you playing more. . . when you choose to be a part of it.
Can't say enough about how great/important play is. Good post! Then again, all your posts are fantastic.
